Museum Trip Guidelines

One of the great art museums of the world, the Art Institute of Chicago presents a collection spanning 5,000 years of artistic expression. Paintings, prints and drawings, sculptures, photographs, video, textiles, and architectural drawings and fragments are complemented by a year-round schedule of exhibitions. And there’s more. The museum presents programs-lectures, workshops, performances, symposia, travel, or courses, every day. From Mini Masters to Elderhostel, there is something for all visitors to do.

Some necessary suggestions for Tuesday’s trip to AIC:

• Bring a note pad, or large flashcards.

• Use pencils instead of pens.

• Be sure to pick up a floor plan of AIC once we arrive at Columbus Drive entrance.

• Please don’t touch the art.

• Keep a safe distance from works of art.

• Respect others. Keep noise to a minimum. (take this suggestion seriously)

• Photography is permitted, but without a flash. Photography of loan and temporary exhibitions
is not permitted (for example: Jasper Johns exhibit).  I would like to suggest that you take no pictures with your cell phones. If you really like a painting, please consider buying a reproduction of it at the Gift shop.

• When doing the self-guided tour activity (provided by me on Tuesday) be sure to explore the museum galleries in small groups (no more than 5 students). I have no problem if you wish to do the assignment alone.

• Once you get home, before the day is over, I recommend you look over the questions (provided by me on Tuesday) and your notes. Make sure you have all the information you need for your summary. You can help each other with the questions, but the summaries should be a place to reflect upon you personal experience of the trip.
