In the upper left hand corner of every window on your Apple computer, you’ll see three buttons: red, yellow, and green.

The red button closes the window but not the application. To close the application, depress the Command key next to your space bar (⌘) with your left thumb and tap the letter Q with your ring finger.

The yellow button minimizes the window. If you click this button, you’ll see the window swoop into your dock. If you want to see the window again, simply click the small icon representing that window and it will swoop back to center stage.

The green button toggles your window between two optimal sizes. One setting usually fills your display height and/or width. You choose the other setting by dragging the bottom right corner of your window up, down, left, or right, until it’s just right. The next time you open that application, your windows will “remember” your settings.

One of the key improvements in Leopard is the new features in Spotlight. I’ll be posting a few of the more useful new features in Spotlight in upcoming blog posts. If you weren’t a Spotlight user with Tiger, the new Leopard Spotlight may well win you over. If you’re unfamiliar with using Spotlight, you activate it by either click on the magnifying glass in the upper right corner of your screen or pressing (command + spacebar).

One very hand thing the new Spotlight can do is act as a calculator. Simply type in the equation to be solved, and the answer pops up without having to launch a calculator. See this blog for more information or check out a video demonstration.

So far, the biggest win I see in Leopard is being able to create an iCal event right out of a Mail message. The program is smart enough to know when a date appears; hovering over it produces a click box to enter it in iCal. It works really well and is a major timesaver.
