A Clear Mission, Revisited

If this blog were a movie, a title would appear in this frame saying “Several Months Later.” We planned to change our blog platform during spring quarter, and as end of year pressures accumulated, the move was postponed numerous times. So…I didn’t post for a long time. But all is now well and I look forward to posting regularly.

The Information Systems retreat I mentioned so long ago took place earlier this week. One of our goals was to write a formal mission statement. If you recall, a clear mission is one of the components of the “right swing ” we want to take as we serve our user base. Here’s what we came up with.

The Information Systems Group’s mission is to:

  • Serve our students by empowering school community members to take full advantage of technology to learn, grow, share, and create within and beyond our walls
  • Serve our faculty, administrators, and staff by providing reliable, effective solutions and technical support for their instructional and operational needs
  • Enhance our school’s sense of community by thoughtfully applying current and emerging communication tools
  • Contribute leadership and direction for school technology efforts

We felt good about the outcome after spending a couple of hours gathering drafts from paired-up staffers, finding common themes, and doing some group wordsmithing.

We’ll go with it as is for this year, featuring it in our communications with the school community on occasion. Then we’ll revisit it next summer to see if it has had real value to us in making decisions and guiding our practice. Feel free to comment on it. One is always worried that such things are too generic or too long, but this felt right to us, combining service with leadership, putting kids first without ignoring the rest of our school community, and acknowledging the global aspects of technology use.
