Merit School of Music

Eighth Grade Graduation
As in years past, seventh grade band and orchestra students will be performing as part of the eighth grade graduation ceremony, at Mandel Hall, on Tuesday, June 10, at 3:00 p.m. An information letter and permission slip was distributed to students this week. WFMT Introductions
Earlier this spring, classical radio station WFMT began a new program called, “Introductions.” Each Saturday, from 11:00 a.m. until noon, various high school musicians and ensembles, from the greater Chicago area, are featured. Sherwood Conservatory Scholarship Competition
Recently, Sherwood Conservatory, at Columbia College, held preliminary auditions for the annual Scholarship Competition. Lab School winners were:

Fourth graders have been busy trying all the various band and orchestra instruments which are taught as part of fifth grade music classes. Information is being sent by mail to each fourth grade family, but we’d also like to have this material available online.

Elliot Eisner is emeritus professor of art and education at Stanford University. Trained in the visual arts, he received his Ph.D. in education from the University of Chicago. Verdi Requiem
On Saturday, April 26, the Midwest Young Artists Season Finale takes place at the Civic Opera House in Chicago, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Artists include the MYA Chorale and Symphony Orchestra, the Northwestern University Chorus, the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana, as well as guest soloists. Josey Mintel, a U-High junior, will be playing violin, as a member of the orchestra. The link below gives more detailed information on what promises to be a fantastic performance.

Seventh Grade Spring Concert on April 15
Seventh grade band, choir, and orchestra students will perform on Tuesday, April 15, at 7:30 p.m., in Mandel Hall. Please click on the following link if you need a map:

Students should arrive by 7:00 in their concert attire (white top, black dress pants or skirt, black shoes).
We have reminded students that participation in concerts is a course requirement. Parents, please give them your support by seeing that they arrive on time, with instrument, and music. As a reminder, none of the Lab School music rooms will be open prior to the performance.
Our seventh graders have been rehearsing diligently in preparation for this performance. We invite family and friends to share in their music making. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact any of the seventh grade music teachers.

Important News From This Past February
Each year, the Union League Civic and Arts Foundation holds a jazz improvisation competition. Participants are then narrowed down to twelve finalists, and these finalists performed at Buddy Guy’s Legends Nightclub, on February 20.
This year, U-High junior Monique Johnson was one of twelve finalists
chosen out of fifty-five students who auditioned. Students had to improvise
on a twelve-bar blues piece, and jazz standard, of their choice. Monique chose Blue Monk and Pfrancing. Monique placed 4th in the High School Division. As a result, she![]()
has been invited to be a member of the C&A Ensemble. This quartet
performs together for one year at public and private events throughout the
Chicago area.

Recital Night
On Tuesday, March 4, Lab School student musicians performed at Fulton Recital Hall as part of the Lab School’s Recital Night. This event is for our more advanced students, to perform solo and chamber music from the classical repertoire. The evening was a fantastic success, and those in the audience were able to hear a variety of music from musicians in grades seven through twelve.
