Clarinetist Andrew Sandwick and the IMEA All-State Ensembles
On the weekend of January 29 – 31, students from throughout the state of Illinois participated in the all-state band, choir, and orchestra festival in Peoria. Each ensemble consisted of a regular all-state group, as well as ensembles for more accomplished musicians, the honors ensembles. U-High junior Andrew Sandwick was the principal clarinetist of the honors band. Out of approximately 75 clarinetists auditioning for band, Andrew earned the top chair.
The process began in October, when students auditioned for their district ensembles. Those musicians with the top scores were then invited to participate in the all-state festival groups. Once at all-state, another round of auditions determined chair placement for the weekend.
Andrew and the other members of the All-State Honors Band were under the direction of conductor and composer Mark Camphouse, of George Mason University. The weekend concluded with a concert featuring all the ensembles, held in the Peoria Civic Center. Congratulations to Andrew for this accomplishment, and for being the first Lab School student in recent memory to participate in the all-state festival.
