Music and the Brain
Last week as part of the middle school Open House presentations, some of the music department faculty referenced recent research in the area of how music influences learning and brain development in children and adults. Beginning in October of 2008, the Library of Congress began a two year series of lectures and presentations on this area of research. Visit their website http://www.loc.gov/rr/perform/concert/0809-musicandthebrain.html to access webcasts and podcasts on various topics relating to music and the brain.

Chicago Jazz Festival
This afternoon, at 4:45, at the Petrillo Music Shell,
recent U-High graduate Monique Johnson (class of 09)
will perform the national anthem as part of the opening
ceremonies of the Festival. Monique performs at the
request of the Jazz Institute of Chicago.
On Saturday, Lab School faculty member Tomeka Reid
currently on leave) performs with Nicole Mitchell’s
Black Earth Strings Ensemble, beginning at 2:20, at
the Jazz on Jackson stage.
It’s a great weekend of jazz, and it is particularly
exciting to have one of our recent graduates as a
participant.
