As I reflected on the work the Parents’ Association did this past 2008-2009 school year, I realized how busy we were. I would like to thank all parents and fellow PA board members who supported and worked with me to make the PA a successful organization. I was also very proud to be involved with the PA.
We sponsored parent dinners and parent nights in conjunction with the administration. We brought in Sonya Malunda and Andrew G. Neal of the Diversity Task Force to present the schools diversity plan and our very own Ken James, Director of Student Services, among many guest speakers at PA meetings.
The HS, MS, LS and N/K councils were hard at work. The councils organized potlucks, chats with the principals, parent’s night out, lunches for teachers, breakfast and orientation reception for new families, giant gym nights, parent-to-parent meetings and a back to school BBQ. We had a parent who stepped forward to run Bizaarnival which is a safe alternative to Halloween. The councils also provided PSAT testing snacks, May Project refreshments, faculty appreciation lunches, and Popsicle day. The MS and HS council handled the reception, luncheon, 8th grade dance and musical entertainment for graduations.
The council also provided grants to help enhance educational experience at the Laboratory Schools. Some of grants give out this year were monies for a shed, Advisory grants, monies for the Class of 2009 scholarship, prom grant, community service refreshments, teachers umbrellas, Euro Magazine and lemonade reception. Grant monies were also used to bring in speakers John Rybicki, Dr. Martha Heineman Pieper, Ph. D, Rosalyn Wiseman, Evelina Pereira-Webber and Incognito.
We could not accomplish all that we do without parent volunteers. We encourage everyone to get involved with the PA. Like I always say the best way to find out what your child experiences at school is to come and take a look yourself. LAB has many opportunities, big and small, for parents to volunteer their time, expertise and energy. We have a lot of fun doing what we do. Come join the fun!
