Varsity girls started off their post season with a resounding bang, defeating Tilden 11-0.
Although the game started out with 15 slow and scoreless minutes, once U-High “got the ball rolling” so to speak, they kept it rolling in their possession for the remainder of the game. Gabbie Clark broke the initial drowsiness of the match with her first unassisted goal. This was quickly followed by a an elegantly chipped second goal by Iona Hall, assisted by Chrissy Delicata. Picking up the cue, Amy Solomon assisted Kate Reott from the sideline, for the Maroons’ third goal. Not content with her scoring, Kate turned around and assisted Emily Kuo for the fourth goal of the game. Gabbie kept the momentum going by scoring her second goal of the game shortly afterwards, bringing U-High to five. Number six followed closely behind off of a pass from Ciara Zagaja resulting in Iona’s second finish of the game. U-High’s seventh goal was the result of an own goal from Tilden, but it was largely facilitated by Emily Kuo. As the first half proceeded, Sasha Karapetrova, exploring new field positions, earned a goal off an assist from Emily. Hard work and tenacity on the part of Kendall Pelander resulted in the Maroons’ ninth goal at the end of the first period.
U-High played a disciplined second half. Both Sasha and Ciara scored early off of long, impressive and seemingly unlikely attempts. The game ended 11-0.
Today also marked Senior Day 2008 for the soccer team. Seniors Kendall Pelander, Chrissy Delicata, Lucy O’Keefe, Sara Sandmel and Alison Feder were recognized for their contributions to the program over the past 4 years.
Due to their win, the Maroons will advance to the regional finals, held this Friday.
