Baseball can be a downright cruel game at times with the best team on the field not necessarily winning on the scoreboard. Unfortunately, this scenario came to fruition as the 7th Grade Baseball Team lost a heartbreaker to Westminster Christian by a score 0f 7-6 in Elgin on Saturday (Maroons are 3-2 for the season). With the Maroons down by 1 in the top of the 6th inning, Joey Peng drove in the tying run in with a single to right field. The game remained tied until the bottom of the 7th inning. The first batter in the bottom of the 7th reached on a walk, stole 2nd base, and advanced to third on a wild pitch. The next two hitters were intentionally walked to to set up a possible force play at the plate. Daniel Asplin struck out the next two batters that stepped up to the plate. Unfortunately, the first pitched thrown to the next batter hit the backstop scoring the game winning run for Westminster. The team showed plenty of grit and heart battling all game until the final pitch was thrown. John Browne and Daniel Asplin combined for 6 2/3 innings of work on the mound keeping the team in it until the very end. The hitting stars of the game were: Steven Glick (3 for 3, 1 BB, 1 run), Lucas Bucheim-Jurrison (2 for 3, 1 BB, 2 RBI’s, 1 run), Dan Klonowski (1 for 4, 2 RBI’s, 1 run scored), and Joey Peng (1 for 3, 1 RBI). The Maroons will attempt to finish the season over .500 against Latin Academy on Tuesday in Lincoln Park.
