The first match of the season brought out droves of fans to witness this classic confrontation. Things looked bleak in the first half when Ignatius scored less than a minute into the game and then tacked on another goal at the 10 minute mark to leave the Maroons with an 0-2 deficit at the mid-point.
But it was a tale of two halves in this match, as Shane Veeneman put one in the back of the net in the 39th minute. A concerted effort to win 50-50 balls in the second half helped the U-High boys to play more possession. Dean Balabanov drew a foul in the penalty box in the 58th minute and equaled the score at 2-2 with his PK.
From there it was up to the defense, led by sweeper Ben Postone, and with the help of his wing-backs, Aalap Herur-Raman and Grant Hensel, to hold the line. Key saves in the last few minutes by keeper Philip Lockwood-Bean, halted the Ignatius offense.
The JV Boys look to continue this momentum with a 4:30 match Wednesday, September 3rd at Francis Parker.
