The JV Maroons took to the turf field at Montrose today in a conference showdown with the Latin Romans. The Maroons needed this win to remain undefeated in the Independent School League, and retain their championship title.
The starting line-up consisted mostly of sophomores who had been with the program for the past two years; defenders Ben Postone, Austin Morris and Aalap Herur-Raman, midfielders Julian du Buclet, Michael Sullivan, Jonathan Portugal, and Daniel Traub, and forwards Tim Thomas and Amir Hay. Sophomore reserves Jonathan Jou and Mike Baroody also provided key minutes, while the team greatly missed one of our hardest workers, sophomore defensive specialist Grant Hensel, whose season ended early due to injury.
The first half was fairly uneventful, but in the second half, the air attack would make all the difference. Dean Balabanov served two great balls on set plays in the 53rd and 58th minute that both found Michael Sullivan’s head and the back of the net (or a Roman’s hand). From there, keeper Philip Lockwood-Bean earned his fourth shutout of the season to preserve the victory.
Congratulations to the entire JV squad (9-3-2, 6-0) for all their efforts. The season’s not over yet though; two tough matches await Wednesday, October 15th (4:30) at Mount Carmel, and Saturday, October 18th (10:00am) in a rematch at Timothy Christian .
