The girls finally slew their foes from Latin in one of the best all-around games the girls have played in years. Everyone contributed in this one, if not through points then in other ways. Alexis Jenkins led all scorers with 24 points, 10 boards and 8 assists. Madeline Stecy and Rose Traubert dominated the glass getting 14 rebounds apiece. Johanna Heinneman-Pieper had a season high 15 points including a 3-point dagger in the 3rd quarter that stemmed a Latin surge. Gabby Lubin had 12 points, including two quick 3-point shots that aided a 2nd quarter comeback.
Down by as much as 7 points early, U-High could not stop a flurry of 3-point shots from Latin’s bombers. But stronger defense in 2nd quarter, including a stellar effort from Brianna Watson in which she shut down both the drive and 3-point shots of one of Latin’s top scorers, led to a 17-5 run that put U-High up by 5 at the half.
U-High never lost the lead. In the 3rd quarter the lead increased to as much as 13 points, but Latin closed the gap to just 3 points with 25 seconds to go. Fortunately, U-High’s shooting from the charity stripe held up, and the girls came away with a well-earned victory.
