On May 22-23 the boys team used a solid all around effort that saw each of its four positions (first and second singles and first and second doubles) earning points to win the sectional tournament. U-High finished in first place with 26 points, followed by Payton Prep with 20 points, DeLaSalle with 16 points, and Brother Rice with 12 points.
In the singles final on Saturday morning, Tyler Anderson played against the number won seed from DeLaSalle, Kris Powell, and lost a close three setter, 6-4, 1-6, 5-7. Tyler’s second place finished qualified him to compete in the state tennis finals on May 28-30.
Evan Levin and Bill Steuben won the doubles championship with a straight set victory over Brother Rice’s Gilhooley and Hansen. Evan and Bill’s victory never looked in doubt and they won handily, 6-2, 6-1.
Also competing for U-High were Aneesh Gupta at second singles and Mark Wittels and Madhav Suresh at second doubles. Both second singles and second doubles won key first rond matches that amassed valuable points for U-High. A great team effort with contributions from all positions made the difference.
For the first time in some years the Girls Tennis team and the Boys Tennis team have won their respective sectional tournaments in the same academic year.
