U-High Advances to Sectional Final

The glass slipper still fits.

The bats came out hot on Thursday as the Maroons (12-5) defeated Walter Payton College Prep 16 to 8, and advanced to Saturday’s Brooks Sectional final. U-High had fifteen hits as a team against four different Payton pitchers and slugged their way to victory. Senior second baseman and leadoff man Tim Parsons set the tone for the rest of the lineup, going 5 for 5 with an RBI. Fellow senior and starting pitcher Mike Casey had two hits, driving in 3, highlighted by a bomb to left field that one-hopped the fence. Senior third baseman Morgan Murphy went 2 for 5 with a game-breaking, bases-loaded triple in the fifth inning that gave the Maroons a comfortable lead.

Mike Casey (3-0 in the playoffs), coming off of his perfect game against Leo, went five innings and kept the Maroons in the game, obtaining the win. Junior left-hander Mark Woerner took the rubber in midst of a sixth-inning jam, and came up with two huge strikeouts to bail U-High out of the inning. Mark finished the game out strong and helped seal the deal in yet another U-High upset.  Senior first baseman Max Wagner came up big with a trademark scoop on the final play of the game, and soon afterward the team stormed the field in excitement.

University High, the fifteenth seed in the Brooks Sectional, will face top seeded Jones College Prep on Saturday at 4:00. As one of the final 16 teams left in the Class 3A tournament, with a victory the Maroons would become Chicago’s lone representative in the Supersectional round which showcases the last 8 3A teams from around the state. After upsetting Kenwood (2), Leo (10), and Payton (5), U-High continues their Cinderella story as they go looking to take home their first Sectional title in school history. Mark Woerner will take the mound aiming to subdue a Jones team that knocked the Maroons out of their regional final in a tight game last season.  Come down to 111th and King Drive on Saturday and become a part of the Maroons’ amazing season as they try and advance to Monday’s supersectional game. Show your U-High pride and root for the Maroons in a highly anticipated rematch that looks to be one of the best games of the season. One team, one dream!
