On Saturday, June 6, University High’s amazing 2009 season came to a close. As the fifteenth seed in their sectional, the Maroons’ cinderella run ended against number one seed Jones College Prep with a final score of 9-2. U-High could not string together baserunners as the Eagles played solid defense and chipped away at U-High pitchers Mark Woerner and Mike Casey. The Maroons mounted rallies in each of the last two innings, but it was too little too late. It was a well played game by both sides, but in the end U-High did not have enough of their previous playoff magic to pull it out.
U-High finished their season with twelve wins and six losses, the fourth straight year in which the Maroons improved upon their record. The team was a sectional semifinalist, unprecedented in school history, and tied for second in the ISL. Four All-Conference players stood out this season, with Seniors Mike Casey and Tim Parsons and Junior Mark Woerner making the first team, and Junior Daniel Levine receiving an honorable mention. Mike and Tim were co-recipients of the Baseball Coaches Award, honoring them for their four years of hard work and exceptional play at the varsity level. Senior Alex Zimmer recieved an honorable mention. Along with Mike, Tim, and Alex, U-High graduates seniors Morgan Murphy, Max Wagner, and Andrej Rosic from their roster. The contributions of all six seniors to the program have been enormous and will not be forgotten. The team would like to thank all of the fans, particularly the parents, who came out and supported them this season.
The Maroons, led by Daniel Levine and Mark Woerner, will retain six of twelve varsity players and look to contend for the ISL and improve their record once again next season.
