U-High Varsity Girls Tennis Finishes 2nd in ISL Tournament

On Saturday, October 10th the U-High Girls Tennis Team finished second in the ISL tournament. North Shore Country day won the tournament with 19 points, followed by U-High’s 18 points, Woodlands Academy’s 16 points, Latin’s 14 points, Morgan Park Academy’s 13 points, Francis Parker’s 4 points, and Elgin Academy’s 1 point.

The final ISL conference standings are still up in the air. But at present it is most likely that U-High will share the ISL Conference title with North Shore because the U-High Girls team had the best regular season in the ISL (6-0 record) and North Shore finished first in the ISL tournament. The league championship for tennis is determined by a combination of points earned from the regular season and points earned in the ISL conference tournament. That means that the conference championship will not be finally decided until all the teams have finished playing their head-to-head matches.

U-High’s second singles player, freshman Laura Anderson had an outstanding tournament and won the second singles championship over Ivory Bradley from Morgan Park Academy, 6-2, 6-0. Laura’s game has matured by leaps and bounds the past few weeks and she is now playing with a lot of confidence, consistency, and tenacity. She is improving with every match and is coming into her best form just in time for the state sectional tournament.

Caitlin Finn and Brianna Solola also had an excellent tournament and finished in second place at second doubles, losing to North Shore’s Morris and Olswanger in the championship match, 4-6, 5-7. With their results, Laura, Caitlin, and Brianna all became ISL All Conference Players. U-High’s third doubles, Faith Dremmer and Maddy Campion also had a very good tournament and finished in third place by defeating Woodland’s Academy’s O’Neill and Milano, 7-6, 6-1. Rachel Sylora and Leslie Sibener also competed at first doubles and finished in fifth place overall.

U-High’s first singles player, Gabbie Clark, lost a very close semifinal match to Morgan Park Academy’s Jerricka Boone, 6-3. 3-6, 6-7 (4-7). Gabbie took an early lead when when she won the first set, but Boone came storming back to take the second. Boone’s run continued well into the third set before Gabbie began rallying when she was 1-5 down. She stared down several match points and played her way into a tiebreak. Boone picked up her game just enough to win the tiebreak and knock Gabbie out of the semis. Gabbie went on to finish third in the tournament by defeating Paker’s Grace Smith, 6-4, 6-0.
