7th Grade Boys Soccer Defeats Elgin

The 7th grade boys soccer team traveled to Elgin on Saturday for a rematch against the only team to defeat them so far this season.  Elgin defeated the Maroons 6-4 back in mid-September, and the team had been looking forward to the rematch ever since that day.  The 7th grade started out tentatively, allowing Elgin to set the tempo of the game with their solid foot skills and dangerous attack through the middle of the field.  Early in the game an Elgin midfielder ripped a laser of a shot past goal keeper Henry Utset to take the lead.  But the Maroons fought right back, renewing their defensive resolve and winning fifty-fifty balls to bring possession into Elgin’s backfield, where Sean “The Shark” Selig found the back of the net on a pass from Carl Forhan to tie the game at 1-1.

In the second half the Maroons locked down the middle of the field, and after an Elgin hand ball in their own goal box, Fohran hammered home a penalty kick to give the Maroons the lead.  Minutes later Selig scored his second of the game to give the Maroons a 3-1 lead.  Elgin did not give up, though.  Their  skilled midfield continued to take hard shots from all over the field, and with less than ten minutes remaining they managed to put on past goal keeper Utset to bring their deficit back to one.  The Maroons continued to play tenacious defense throughout the second half, and when the final whistle blew they emerged victorious with a 3-2 win over a talented team.  The Maroons played their best soccer of the year in this game; every player should be proud of his effort.  Thanks to all the fans who made the long trip north to see the team play so well on such a  beautiful autumn morning!
