The 7th grade boys soccer team faced off against a talented Lake Forest Country Day team Tuesday afternoon in their final home game of the season. The Maroons got off to a rough start, giving up a goal in the first minute of the game. Lab’s defense spent much of the first half catching up with LFCD’s skilled forwards, and they ended up giving up another goal with only seconds to play before the end of the first half. The Maroons battled back in the second half, though, with goal keeper Henry Utset setting the tone by making several impressive saves. Early in the second half the Maroons began to increase their offensive pressure, and after a pinball moment in front of Lake Forest’s goal Sean Selig found the back of the net to get the Maroons onto the board. Minutes later Selig found a seam in the LCFD defense and tore off on a dramatic forty yard breakaway, finishing off the run with a screaming shot just beneath the cross bar. The two teams battled back and forth with intense, physical play and offensive chances for both sides for the remainder of the half until, with only a minute remaining, Lake Forest scored on a long shot to take the lead, 3-2. The Maroons kept their heads up, though, and at the kickoff brought the entire team forward into the offensive half. Their intense pressure lead to a slip on Lake Forest’s part when one of their defenders was called for a deliberate kick to the head in their own goal box, resulting in a penalty kick with only seconds remaining. Carl Fohran stepped up and buried the shot in the back of the net to tie the game as the final whistle blew. The Maroons proved their tenacity in the second half and should be proud of the way they ended their last home game. The team travels to the Montrose fields to finish their season against Hardy Prep tomorrow afternoon. Thanks to all the parents who came out to cheer the team on in one of their toughest matches of the season!
