7th Grade Boys Soccer Finishes Season On High Note

The 7th grade boys soccer team traveled to the Montrose turf field Wednesday afternoon to play Hardy Prep for their last game of the season.  Upon arriving at the field the Maroons learned that the schedule had been flipped and the 7th grade would play first instead of second; with only moments to warm up and no time to take any touches on the tricky turf field, the 7th grade put on their game faces and took to the pitch.  The team started out on their heels, but once they settled in and started to make better touches on the fast surface they started to control the possession of the ball in the offensive half of the field.  About halfway into the half David “Brownie” Browne sent a beautiful long pass over the Hardy Prep defense to a streaking Sean Selig who finished with a great shot to give the Maroons a 1-0 lead.  Late in the half Browne scored a goal of his own on a defensive breakdown in Hardy Prep’s goal box, playing a shot off a Hardy Prep player that snuck into the corner of the goal.  The Maroons started the second half on a sour note, allowing Hardy Prep to take the opening kickoff uncontested to the goal without anyone stepping up to stop their attacker.  Surrendering goals at the start and end of halves has become a worrisome habit for this team, one which they will need to correct as eighth graders.  But the team battled right back, with Selig sending a through pass to Browne who scored to bring the total to 3-1.  Minutes later Max Smith added a goal of his own.  Just before the final whistle the referee whistled a hand ball in the box against Hardy Prep, and stalwart defender David Yunis buried the penalty kick to bring the final score to 5-1.

The team has come a long way in terms of skills, communication, and camaraderie this season.  They finished the season with an impressive record of 10-1-2.  Highlights from the season include defeating Parker twice, wins against talented North Shore Country Day and Lake Forest Country Day teams, and the victory at Elgin in their rematch against the only team to defeat them this season.  One last time, thanks to all the friends, family, and friends who helped out and came to cheer on the team throughout the season!
