The first day of the state tournament was drizzly and much too wet for outdoor play. After a couple hours delay all the matches were sent to indoor sites and the back draw was cancelled. This was most disappointing for all the players because they knew it meant that they were now in a single elimination tournament–one loss and you are out. Laura Anderson and Rachel Sylora played at SCORE in La Grange; Leslie Sibener and Brianna Solola played in Hanover Park; Gabbie Clark played her singles match in Arlington Heights. All three U-High teams won their first match. Gabbie won easily in straight sets over Marquette’s Caroline Claywell, 6-0, 6-0. Laura and Rachel won in straight sets over Quincy’s Gabby Moss and Kelsey O’Donnell, 6-2, 6-4. Leslie and Brianna won in straight sets over Midlothian’s Laura Potts and Nora Nagle, 6-0, 6-0.
At Gabbie’s indoor site it was decided to only play one round. This was unfortunate because it puts her one match behind most of the other singles players, a difference she will probably have to make up on Friday.
Leslie and Brianna played well in their second match but lost in two sets to Glenbard West’s Samantha Reedy and Molly Hennessey, 1-6, 2-6. Both girls played some wonderful tennis in both their matches and had a good state tournament. Rachel and Laura also had a tough second round match. They played Loyola Adademy’s Caroline Bauer and Molly Montgomery and lost in two sets, 0-6, 2-6. Laura and Rachel played very well in both matches but came up against a very good doubles team in the second round and couldn’t quite stay with them. Rachel and Laura also had a very good state tournament.
Play continues Friday for Gabbie.
