On Friday afternoon the 8th grade boys soccer team battled Francis Parker in their much anticipated rematch. The Maroons dictated the pace of play throughout the first half, pressing forward and winning free balls with great determination. Lucas Buchheim-Jurisson scored with a beautiful header to give the Maroons a 1-0 at the half. Parker scored two quick goals midway through the second half, but the Maroons did not let up, with several dramatic defensive stands and a late flurry of offensive chances that had Parker on their heels. Despite several strong shots on goal, the Maroons were unable to find the net, and Parker escaped with the win. The Maroons played some of their best soccer of the year and can be proud of their effort in this game. Look for the team to rebound at home in another big match this Tuesday when they play Latin at 4:30 pm on Jackman Field. Thanks to all of the family, friends, and fans who came out to cheer the team on.

The MS 7th Grade Soccer team beat Southwest Christian convincingly on 9/22 by the score of 6-1. Later that week, MPA hosted the Maroons on their homecoming celebration on Saturday 9/27. After a close score of 3-3 for the majority of the second half, Lab broke the tie with Chris Lawson’s laser shot in the left side of the goal. He inspired the rest of the team with his energy which resulted in 2 more goals and a 6-3 final. Friday’s match-up versus Parker will be a good test to determine if we improved since our 1-3 loss to them on 9/19. Parker is a very skilled and physical team. There should be a big crowd on Friday, so make sure you arrive early for the 5:00 kickoff.

On Wednesday, October 1, Gabbie Clark continued her season-long unbeaten streak with a dramatic upset win over last year’s Girls State Singles Tennis Champion, Elizabeth Epstein from Francis Parker. The 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-2 victory was Gabbie’s first win over Epstein and probably the biggest win of her three year career at U-High.

The ISL contest was played under difficult conditions–on her opponent’s home courts, in a heavy wind, and on poorly lit courts after darkness fell. But it was played at a high level from the outset, and virtually every game was a series of long baseline rallies that more often ended in a winner than an opponent’s error.

Nothing seemed to faze Gabbie in this match, and her determination and will to win were unstoppable. She was down a break in the first set and came back to win it in a very close tiebreak. Her game dropped a little in the second set and Gabbie lost the set 2-6. But despite being down an early break in the final set, Gabbie roared back to take the set decisively at 6-2. Gabbie’s solid defense, superior foot speed, and power from the baseline all combined to wear Epstein down, and eventually resulted in the well-deserved victory.

The Girls Team defeated Parker 4-1 overall. Margot Turek lost at second singles, 0-6, 0-6; Sofia Iatarola and Rachel Sylora won at first doubles, 6-3, 6-3; Leah Sibener and Leslie Sibener won at second doubles, 6-4, 6-2; and Liz Abello and Maggie Carton won at third doubles, 6-2, 6-7 (6-8), 6-3.

In a rematch of an earlier victory, the U-High Maroons took to the Midway to face the conference rival Francis Parker Colonels.

U-High started on the right note, with Dean Balabanov finding Amir Hay in the 6th minute for a goal off of a free kick.

The next few minutes were quite perilous, as the Maroons looked unorganized on defense, allowing goals in the 9th and 12th minutes.

But this resilient team was not about to let that score stand, Shane Veeneman slotted a brilliant ball that Mikey Sullivan finished in the 17th minute. In the second half, Tim Thomas helped out striker Dean Balabanov with the ultimate game winner.

The Maroons (7-3-2, 5-0) will play a 4:30 match tomorrow, October 1st, at Riverside-Brookfield.
