I went out to eat something and when I came back, the filmmaking club had written this promising screenplay.
Amrita, Yael and Layla
Ninjas/greenscreen/musical/unicorn/SILENT MOVIE
Ninjas have a ninja party celebrating their 32nd birthday party with Choceur chocolates. Amrita, Yael and Layla are the ninjas. It is Ms.Weiss-yoda ninja’s birthday.
There is a big noise.
Silent BAM drums.
We all look at the window, and behold a unicorn horn is behind the statue of liberty.
Ms. Weiss-yoda informs her top ninjas that the unicorn has been let out (after seeing the unicorn).
We are all startled.
We fly out the window all of a sudden in ninja costumes and embark on our mission to take down the UNICORN.
News reporter follows ninja unicorn fight and informs the public of the new language of the E.U (not silent) .
All three ninjas are on top of the empire state building, making a Charlie’s Angels formation. LAST BATTLE.
Yael drums and scares unicorn and Layla holds it still so it suffers and then Amrita jumps on it and eats it with the help of her ninja buddies.

The Filmmaking Club would like to say thanks to Pinky, Hugs, Ramona la rana, Sir Quackington, Walter, Optimus Prime, Waylord, Snowbow, Barkie, Scooby, George, and the Floppy-dog-with-no-name for their participation in our stop motion animation. Calling all agents to come pick up your stuffed animals during the next week, or we’ll lock them up again in the display case. [oh no!]
Also, to the kind student with the pink ski hat, we have it in the lab and you can come pick it up whenever you want!

Yesterday, we received word that the UCLS Filmmaking Club’s submission won the ACTFL Podcast Contest popular vote! #1 in the High School Category, nation-wide. How cool is that?

Last night, I reflected on why this project worked out so beautifully. It really boils down to all the parties involved. Quite a list…
MR. LIENECK & IS provided the equipment and basic infrastructure for us to work with video.
SUPPORT ASSOCIATES in IS gave us some preliminary advice as we began toying with the idea.
STUDENTS helped decorate the corner of UH207 so that it caught people’s eyes.
MR. LIENECK loaned us the fabulous 1957 eames chair.
STUDENTS and TEACHERS took time out of their day to participate in the recording.
MR. MAGILL and other HS staff supported Claire with bulletin announcements and the distribution of permission letters.
PARENTS and STUDENTS quickly turned around the 22 permission forms for each of the participants in only 24 hours.
MR. FARVER and MS. JACKSON supported Claire in getting the permission letters faxed back to ACTFL, when I was out to a conference, to the point of waiting outside classrooms for participants.
MS. BILLINGSLY posted the video announcement on the home page, which then made it into the Lab e-News (thanks MR. KALLO), maximizing our chances of getting a high number of votes (in the end, over 300!!)
And of course, CLAIRE had the vision, enthusiasm, and determination to see the whole project through to its completion, including wading through all the footage, editing it in Final Cut, getting the word out via bulletin announcements, and coordinating the efforts of her student peers.
A real victory for Claire, the Filmmaking Club, and the entire Lab Schools community.
Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your support!!

Claire submitted a film for the ACTFUL Video Contest from the footage we gathered from students outside the lab from January 30 - February 11. She was limited to only two minutes, so she couldn’t include a lot of the wonderful comments you all recorded. But the good news is that she’ll be making a 5-7 minute version for use at the school AND some silly out takes as well (we’ve got goofballs to spare here at Lab). See here an homage to the 1957 eames chair…
So thanks again to everyone who participated! From Monday, March 3 to Friday, March 7, all of the submissions will be available for a public vote right here, so put in a good word for your peers. And congratulations to the Filmmaking Club and especially Claire for a job well done!

Plans are in motion for the “Great Escape” filming next Thursday during double lunch. Meanwhile, stop motion artists have some fun with a white board and dry erase markers…

The filmmaking club is taking the next step with stop motion animation by working on a short that will be filmed in the cafeteria and based around stuffed animals. Whose stuffed animals? YOUR stuffed animals! The first volunteers came in today…
If you would like to collaborate, bring your stuffed animal in to UH207. Must be at least 1 foot tall. This is your stuffed animal’s big chance. Don’t miss it!

The Filmmaking Club has taken on the challenge of creating a 2-minute podcast explaining why learning a second language is important. They designed an installation which allows students to sit down in a comfortable 1957 eames chair and record their reflections at will. Claire did a great job of making posters and decorations that would bring attention to the display and she tweaked the set-up so that it would be easy to record and store clips.
More to come on this project, but for now, a short clip showing some of the students who helped decorate the hallway.
