Practicing Reflexive Verbs

In the lab, Señora Lopez’s 8th grade Spanish students practice identifying reflexive verbs through paintings by famous Hispanic artists, such as Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Fernando Botero, Diego Velázquez, Salvador Dalí, among others.  To play the game, students look at works (and biographical info about artists) displayed in a Power Point presentation and use DILL to ring in with the reflexive verbs they can identify in each of the paintings. First student to ring in, wins a point! Software used: Power Point, DILL, and overhead projector.

Learning about France

Mme. Collet’s students have spent time working together in the lab to make short presentations about French society and culture.

Collecting visual materials from the internet and writing short descriptions about what they found, student groups worked for several classes to create their presentations in Keynote. They finished the process by recording a narration of the contents . Students shared their presentations with each other in class later.

Welcome to 2009-2010!

Welcome the World Language Lab’s 2009-2010 school year!  We’ve had plenty of changes to mark the new year, not the least a new lab coordinator (me, Colin Warren)…

As the new lab coordinator, I’m pleased to announce the lab is up to date with the latest version of DiLL and many other software packages and we have new headsets throughout the lab.  We will also be available for reservation during all periods of the day, starting this week.  Please check the schedule (easily available through the Yuperstar blog page) and sign up when available.

If you have any questions about using the lab or our software, please feel free to sign up for an appointment, or send an email to me (cvwarren@ucls.uchicago.edu).

We’ve already had several classes in the lab, and are looking forward to watching everyone learn!

I’m off to IALLT

I will be gone from the lab this week presenting at the IALLT 2009 conference in Atlanta Georgia with the “DiLL dudes“, as I affectionately call them. Should be a great opportunity to learn new things and meet new people. I’ll try to post pictures and comments throughout the week.

Charting a course toward the interactive language lab using DiLL (Digital Language Lab)

This session will introduce a new language lab system, DiLL, created by Northwestern University and how it has been shared to and used by both university and K-12 peer institutions including Grand Valley State University and the University of Chicago Laboratory Schools. Both schools have
seen impressive results using the software including improved ease of use, an increase in lab demand, an increase in number of faculty users, unprecedented levels of student interest and
involvement, and the development of new and innovative teaching techniques that have been made possible only through the use of this new software.

May Project in process!

A few of the senior Support Associates in IS are working with me to design a rubric-based evaluation tool during the next couple of weeks. We’re pretty excited about this tool. It will allow multiple students to evaluate a single student giving a presentation and offer that student insight into how they might improve.

In other UCLS development news, two 7th graders made headlines this week with their new iPhone app, available now in the App Store. Check out the news clip here.

Spring at last!!

It’s my birthday today (woo hoo!) and I feel like Spring has come to celebrate. The courtyard looks lovely in green and the stage for this year’s Rites of May production is coming together nicely.

If you’re in the area, don’t miss the High School production of Alice in Wonderland, which will run May 14, 15, and 16th at 8:00 PM. Tickets are on sale for $10 in the HS lobby.

AP Exams this week

AP Exams continue this morning. This year, we have about 14 students taking the French AP, 10 taking the Spanish AP, and 2 taking the German AP. Each exam is about 3-4 hours long, but teachers break it up with a nice snack in the middle.

Students have prepared all year for this. Good luck, everyone!

Welcome to our visitors from the CSL!

Seven or eight faculty from the University of Chicago Center for the Study of Languages visited us today to learn about DiLL.

The students are off today and faculty are participating in a Professional Development workshops on the “languages” of many disciplines, including math, science, music, and literature.

Tomorrow is Connections and a small team of us will be taking stop motion video of the annual event to show at the end. Should be cool.

Mr. Jon Sun and Ms. Xiang-lu Liang contributed items for a display about Chinese culture. The faces you see around the display are 40 sections of a very long kite. Each of the different colors represents a different kind of general in the Chinese army.

Come claim your watch

watch.jpg

A LOT of students are leaving things in the lab these days, I’m not sure why. All of a sudden, as soon as students leave the room, I find notebooks, papers, textbooks, wrappers, pens, papers, etc. scattered everywhere. So this is a friendly reminder to teachers to please build in clean-up/log-off time into the class session. Students: please scan your desk area before you leave.

I have a TIMEX EXPEDITION (Indiglo) Men’s watch at my desk. Sending telepathic message to rightful owner. Scooby Doo found his rightful owner last week, which was good. You’ll see a table outside UH207 with other items that I find during the day.

Accents in HTML

Here’s a handy chart for inserting accented characters into HTML-only text boxes on your blog or in PowerTeacher Gradebook. Look for the character you want in the first column and then copy the HTML Entity in the second column for use in your text box.

First Film Project in the Lab

I’ve been hoping students and teachers would take advantage of all the cool iLife ‘08 technology we have here in the Project Area. Today, four of Ms. Spaltro’s Latin class students came up to edit footage from the assassinations of Ceasar before break. I can’t wait to see the results!

Singing in German

Frau Steinbarth’s class came in a few days before break to sing no less than 13 different songs in German that they had just learned the week before. They did an excellent job and we will be posting their songs shortly on WLDX. For now, here’s a sample.

Think SUNSHINE

I can’t believe that just two months ago I was gah gah about the snow. I thought it was so BEAUTIFUL… silly me. The white stuff might LOOK harmless as it falls, but all it does is make it harder for school/business life to go on as usual. Athletic events are being canceled. Commutes are dangerous and tiring. People just want to sleep… And I’m told that Lab hasn’t closed for a single day in 19 years because… because… what would the parents do who work at the University? ummmm… okay. I can handle that.

STAY HOME. That’s right. Everybody just stay home. It would do us good. Even parents, teachers, and staff need an unexpected day off now and again. It’s high time. So if it’s going to keep coming, by golly, let it come. I want 20″ tonight.

Lost & Found

It must be the snow. Or something. But we’re starting to see a lot of flash drives, text books, papers, and trash left in the WLL. I put a table of Lost & Found items out in the hallway last week and things are slowly disappearing - although I can’t tell if they’re going back to their rightful owners… Best way to avoid loosing something at the lab is to check your station carefully before you leave. For utopian results, remember your 3Ps…

St. Nick has a question for you!

Mme. Jackson had a very special guest last week. A Farver-St. Nick visited all the way from France! St. Nick had lots of questions and directions for the 3rd graders: What is 8+7? What is the color of your shirt? Your friend’s shirt? Your hair? How do you draw a picture of big lips, St. Nick, or Mme. Jackson? All the good kids got something special to take home. (Luckily, they were all good.)

Spanish Class Idol

Ms. Susan Joseph did a listening comprehension song activity and used DiLL to communicate instructions to her students. I did something new by signing in as a student myself so that she and I could have a two-way conversation whenever she needed a little coaching. I’m not 100% computer geek, but I’d say I’m about 30%, meaning whenever I can avoid walking across the room by using technology, I do. =)

Here’s a screen shot of me talking to Ms. Joseph from my desk in the corner:
