Students are encouraged to visit the World Language lab during their free time between 7AM - 4PM, Monday through Friday. Teachers may assign out-of-class homework on DiLL or other lab technologies, but we also hope that students will use the lab as a space to complete any of their language assignments or engage in independent language learning.

Here are a few of the activities that can be done in the lab, independent of class:

  • Find a cool YouTube video in the target language and watch it on the big screen tv or projector
  • Watch a foreign film with or without subtitles
  • Listen to audio clips on DiLL in slow and regular speeds to practice pronounciation
  • Watch video clips on yabla.com in Spanish or French or English in slow and regular speeds to improve comprehension
  • Work with Tech Coord to create videos and podcasts for the lab (Right now, I’m looking for someone interested in doing a Google Earth project)
  • Take practice quizzes and do other fun activities on Quia
  • Learn how to use iFlash and create a digital set of flash cards that you can use all year long
  • Learn how to use Garage Band to create your own radio shows in the target language
  • Learn how to use iMovie or FinalCut Pro HD to create your own videos in the target language
  • Learn how to use a wiki for a collaborative language learning project
  • Play with Visual Thesaurus in Spanish
  • Listen to target language music in the WLL Media Library
  • Get help finding podcasts online that address just the areas where you are having troubles (I know of excellent grammar reviews in German, for example)
  • Make an appointment with your World Language teacher or a fellow student to work on a particular language task
  • Use Skype to contact friends living in other countries (exchange students at lab are a great resource for this)
  • Design your own blog or ezine in the target language
  • Help find, contribute, and edit photos in Photoshop CS3 for the /wll blog
  • Do group chats in the target language with friends in your study group
  • Use comic life to create graphic novels in the target language
  • Help the Tech Coord sift through the internet to find audio & video clips that discuss language and/or culture (this post at thinkorthwim.com is a good place to start)
  • Sponsor a film-making, translation, or foreign film club or activity hour
  • Be sure to keep the lab tidy!

The World Language Lab is a superb resource, unique to the Laboratory Schools. We look forward to seeing you in UH207!
