I’m off…
Well, I’m off to Berlin tomorrow. Very excited. I’ve worked hard to leave things in good shape for the upcoming year, especially since I won’t be here during planning week. I truly hope the faculty will take advantage of this blog. I’ve put a lot of time and effort into it, with the sincere hope that it will answer a few questions and solve a few problems before they arise. We’ll see, though!
Today marks the end of my 8th week on the job. What a rush. Even though it’s been quiet around here, it’s been full speed ahead in the World Language Lab. I’m content with what I’ve accomplished. The list never ends, but let’s stop to celebrate for a moment. So far, I’ve:
- Met about half of the faculty
- Done a basic inventory of lab & dept equipment
- Helped set up reservation calendar
- Met with the Diane, Marianne, Steve to get a sense for the vision in mind when the lab was created
- Cleaned the lab
- Learned the basics in terms of how the lab was set up
- Put together the blog
- Dreamed up the YuperStar color scheme
- Ordered new furniture (will probably arrive in 4 weeks or so)
- Visited the DiLL dudes at Northwestern
- Started documenting how the lab works on our internal IS wiki
- Became acquainted with the wonderful IS & facility people, a real treat to work with!
- Began work on the Mac minis
Still to come:
- Meeting all the teachers & hopefully visiting their classes
- Helping teachers get started on DiLL & introducing their classes to the lab
- Making sure all the new students & 5th graders are in the DiLL system
- Building the http://blogs.ucls.uchicago.edu/wll — “public” site for the lab
- Contributing to the IS site & blog
- Permanently installing the Mac minis
- Installing the new wardrobe
- Seeing about some window art
- Getting some pillows in the Welcome Area ??
- Learning a ton of new software and, as always, working with teachers to figure out how we can successfully integrate all of these wonderful resources in the language classroom
A special thanks to everyone that has made my first two months here fun and enjoyable! Ciao! I mean, auf wiedersehen!
