01.15.08 Fac Dev: Intro to Backup
Timeline:
2:30 Pizza Time in the Training Area (corner by my desk)
2:45 Departmental business (Steve Farver)
3:05 Teachers grab chocolate @ seats, IS Team runs through basic backup training
3:20 Distribute DVDs to all of the teachers. Create a burn folder of 4.7GB or less to burn on to a DVD.
Rationale:
[ROB] The # of people that have lost everything.
WLD laptops won’t be renewed until 1/09, so 1 more year when they could potentially go kaput…
What do you want to back up?
[PETE] Description of Home Folder (Settings found in Library, Default Folders: Applications are not as critical as Documents, Music, Photos, iCal, Email)
If you use the folders as intended it will be much easier to backup what you need to. Some kind of organization is important. Including creating a folder for… Sensitive data.
[BROOKS] We do NOT want to back up Sensitive Data with Personal Data on Personal Media:
Power Grade
Class Rosters
Class Birthday Lists
Social security numbers
Addresses
Student health concerns
Learning disability information
Narrative files regarding student progress (teachers sometimes use Text Edit or Word for composing comments and then copy paste into grading programs)
Graded tests and quizzes
[JK] Network:
Nightly Backup
Reasons why backup up on Network is good
Quota Limit (500MB) Not that big! Especially for media. Shared between Public (Websites/Drop Boxes), Classes, Projects, Personal.
[BRIAN] Physical Media:
How big is big? more info
DVD (4.7GB) Dual-Layer (9.4GB) or CD (700MB)
External Hard Drives (Low: 60GB; Med: 300GB; High: 2 Terrabyte Drives $600)
Flash Drives (256MB - 16GB) more info
Personal iPod (20 GB)
.mac accounts (10 GB)
[ASH] Strategies:
Full backup of everything every time (i.e. Use Disk Utility or SuperDuper to do a complete Image of entire computer)
Incremental backup (only backs up what changes)
Leopard Time Machine is coming (Starts with full back up and then incrementally changes) - potential issues with large media files..
Good backup requires organization and optimization of files (.mp3, photo size, .zip files)
Archive non-sensitive old documents (DVDs)
Regularly delete old files
[ALLISON] Backup Software:
Information Systems, as of yet, has no SUPPORTED back-up solution for individual computers other than burning to DVD. There are UNSUPPORTED solutions out there, such as iBackup and SuperDuper, which are easy to use, but IS cannot support you if something goes wrong. Stay tuned for the rest of the story…
Today, we’re going to practice burning a data folder to a DVD…quick demo overhead. First step, label your media.
[EVERYONE] Spread out to Project Area and Training Area. Try creating a DVD burn folder in the Finder. We will be around to help.
