What does the school think about student work being posted on YouTube?

One of my ms school classes that will be making an imovie production asked recently if they could post their finished product on YouTube. I plan to ask Amani and Curt to weigh in on the question. I will ensure that they do not provide their names and use their “German” names or other “fake names” in the production.

Here is Curt’s response and the official school policy for posting things online

Marianne,

This is permissible under the conditions of the AUP (salient portions below my signature, terms of use for YouTube). Credits on films and other incidental information that could be used to identify kids should be omitted from the final edit. It might help to have another pair of eyes and ears review the final cut before posting it (just another adult, does not need clearance from me).

You could also submit it to Apple for iTunes. I’ve forgotten what the process is for getting something approved by them, but I’m sure it’s on the site. [I've got this worked out. Talk to me for more information. -aw]

Sounds like a fun project! I’ll be eager to see the final product.

Curt

“Appropriate security precautions must be taken when using school resources to post online content. Publishing students’ personal information, including telephone numbers, addresses, pictures captioned with student names, schedules, IM screen names, or other information that could be used to identify or locate students is prohibited.

The Laboratory Schools cannot be responsible for the security or accessibility of content stored on Internet servers not managed by the Schools. School community members who choose to use remotely hosted services for school-related purposes may do so, but with the following conditions:
> They do not represent in any way that these are school-owned or managed resources
> The posted content conforms to Laboratory School and University of Chicago Acceptable Use Policies and other published school guidelines for appropriate conduct
> For school employees, the Terms of Use or, in the case of paid resources, the User Agreement or contract for services is submitted to and cleared by the Director of Information Technology prior to purchase or use
> No interaction with advertising is forced, nor is mandatory demographic data entry required to access site content”

And here is Amani’s comment:

Marianne,

This sounds like a great project. I believe Curt has answered the is it
possible piece. I think we also need to remind the students and
their families that these items once posted will exist forever. We
will want to have viewed them very carefully. We may need to get
additional permission from families.

Amani
