03.11.08 Fac Dev: Podcasting in the Language Classroom (Intro)
Leave your questions on Chatzy. There is a link via the fishbowl on YuperStar. Type in your name in the first field. Choose any color. The password to enter is “xxxxxx”. This is where you can type your questions as I give the presentation.
Today’s Agenda:
INTRODUCTION to iTunes, Podcasts, & iPods (Allison) 5 minutes
WHY, WHERE, and WHEN of PODCASTING from the classroom? (Allison) 5 minutes
WATCH A DEMO of today’s Audio Podcasting Activity (Allison + Diane) 8 minutes
HANDS-ON ACTIVITY for those that want to stay. (20 minutes)
Pre-Production:
1. Complete the sentences in the Activity below (in English).
2. Open whoamiworksheet.rtf and type in translations of each phrase for a language that you teach (3 - 8 phrases is sufficient).
3. Save a copy of your .rtf worksheet with your name in the title to the Projects Folder/Faculty Development
4. Print a copy to use when you record on DiLL or in GarageBand

Production:
1. Open GarageBand. Create New Podcast Episode in GarageBand.

2. Save to Desktop with your name in the title.

3. Click on the Media Browser icon.

Click on Audio at the top of the screen.

Select the Playlist called “Podcast Materials”.

4. Drag and drop “WhoAmI-INTRO” into the Jingles track.

Move the “Audio Region” (or orange music bubble) as far left as you can by clicking and dragging on the title.

5. Select either the Male or Female Voice track.

Press Record button and the playhead will start to move to the right.


Begin reading your “WHO AM I” statements as soon as the intro music fades out. Tap the space bar to stop recording.
6. Drag and drop “WhoAmI-CLOSING.mp3″ from the Media Browser into the Jingles Track and position so that it starts when your voice finishes.

Listen to the entire track by moving the playhead
all the way to the left and clicking the play button.
7. Go to the Share menu and select “Send Song to iTunes”. iTunes will open up automatically and play your audio file.

8. Drag completed iTunes file to Projects/World Language/Faculty Development/

9. Allison will upload to WLDX CONNECT.

10. You will also be able to find your podcast by going to the iTunes store and searching for “FRENCH@LAB“, “SPANISH@LAB“, “LATIN@LAB“, “GERMAN@LAB“, or “CHINESE@LAB“.


Congratulations! You’ve just distributed your first podcast!
Possible Post-Production Activities:
1. View/listen to the final projects.
2. Prepare questions to guide student viewing/listening and evaluation.
3. Consider having students use rubrics to grade each other (more accountability). Rubric should balance content with technical ability.
4. Discuss with class the project. What did they enjoy? What could have been better?
5. Evaluate what went well for you as a teacher, what you learned and share with the department on YuperStar blog.
6. Modify your lesson materials for next time. Post lesson plans on YuperStar.com for other teachers.
