Wikipedia translation activity
Here’s an idea for introducing the concept of a Wiki to your students while building vocabulary.
Visit the Wikipedia in English or target language and find an interesting article with a translation progress bar on the right hand side, like this:
Individually, in groups, or as a class, create a simple “T” diagram. Put target language vocabulary words on one side and English definitions on the other. Work both ways, from articles originally written in English and then translated in the target language AND vice versa, so that students can get a sense for the very different styles of written prose.
For advanced classes, tell students (in groups?) to find a target language article that hasn’t been translated into English yet. Give them the choice of topic but limit to 250 words. Show them how to post their translation on the English Wiki using the projector and then have them do it themselves.
